Asbestos Exposure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Occupational exposure to asbestos is known to cause several distinct types of injuries. Generally, the longer a person is exposed to asbestos dust and the greater the intensity of this exposure, the more likely that person is to develop an asbestos-related illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individual susceptibility does, however, vary greatly. In other words, some people can be exposed to a great deal of asbestos over a long period of time and never develop an asbestos-related injury. On the other hand, some people can be exposed to very little asbestos and suffer fatal asbestos related injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All asbestos-related diseases have rather long latency periods (period of time between the first exposure to asbestos and the diagnosis of an asbestos-related disease) ranging from 10 years to 30, 40 or more years. Even though a person may have been exposed to asbestos many years ago, they can still develop asbestos-related injuries. This is because the human body can never entirely rid itself of ingested asbestos. The leading medical and government authorities have concluded that children younger than four years of age are at the greatest risk for lead poisoning and its harmful effects. Impact with these inner surfaces of the skull causes tearing and bruising that results in brain damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Injuries occur when momentum of the brain causes it to impact against a skull that has been decelerated. Typically, TBI is caused by the impact of the head with an object, such as when hitting a windshield or the dashboard of a car. In such cases, the injury is considered to be a closed head injury. Closed head injury may also occur when the brain undergoes a severe forward or backward shaking, such as with infants who are mishandled or in cases involving whiplash suffered during an automobile accident. TBI can also be caused by a penetrating head injury, whereby an object such as a bullet penetrates through the skull and into the brain. Closed head injuries present unique challenges in litigation since they often will demonstrate no obvious external symptoms of injury, even though the damage to the brain can be severe.
